The Passover Lamb (2 Parallel Stories)

The Passover Lamb was slaughtered so that many wouldn’t be.

The judgement of God was coming for them. They had worshiped the gods of Egypt along with their masters-they were just as guilty of idolatry. But they had faith in the promise God gave: that because a lamb was slaughtered, the angel of death (sent by God) wouldn’t slaughter them.

The death of a perfect lamb would be their substitute. Their leader, Moses, then takes them-a freed nation- safely through the chaotic waters of the Red Sea, followed close by Pharaoh and the prospect of enslavement to the Egyptians. But God had already declared them His people by passing over them and not condemning them, by faith in the blood. God then gave them the Law on Mount Sinai. They did not have to obey it before God brought them out of their slavery to Pharaoh in the Exodus-they couldn’t have. But God promised life in Him forever, and His promises are faithful.

The judgement of God was coming for us. We had worshiped the gods of our culture along with them, enslaved to sin-we were just as guilty of idolatry. But we had faith in the promise God gave: that because The Lamb was slaughtered, the wrath of God in Hell wouldn’t slaughter us. The death of The Perfect Lamb would be our substitute. Our leader, the better Moses and Risen Lamb, then took us- a freed nation- safely through the chaotic waters of sin and destruction, followed close by Satan and the prospect of enslavement to sin and death. But God had already declared us His people by passing over us and not condemning us, by faith in The Blood. God then gave us the law on our hearts and the Holy spirit within (+1). We did not have to obey it before God brought us out of our slavery to Satan in our exodus-we couldn’t have. But God promised life in Him forever, and His promises are faithful.

  1. Awesome post Jeff, I was get overwhelmed with emotions thinking of the Sacrificial Lamb and the comparissons made between the previous sacrificial system and Jesus sacrificing. Like He was earthly born in Bethlehem were they kept the sacrificial lambs and He died (for a very short time) in Jerusalem where they sacrificied the lambs. I have went though a Christology course and seen the prophesys written in the Old Testament if you ever get a chance take one and you can see that Jesus is the only possible Messiah it is our faith that we believe He died and rose again but there is no other no one else all the Old Testment Prophesies show that.

    • That’s sweet, Jason. We’ll have to sit down and talk about that study soon in Community Group. I’ve always wanted to find a “crimson thread” study-one that shows Christ throughout the entirety of the scriptures. He’s the point of the whole book!
